How to use the Block Paving Cost Calculator

  1. Enter the area in m². Deduct planters and recesses if needed.
  2. Select the paving type. The calculator applies typical £ per m² for that option.
  3. Add uplifts for edging and linear drainage where required.
  4. Review totals including VAT and download or copy the result.

Use this for budgeting. For tenders and contractor quotes, request a QS estimate with BoQ, prelims, overheads and profit, and risk allowances.

Typical block paving costs per m²

  • Concrete blocks 50–60 mm: £95 to £140 per m² (typical £120).
  • Permeable concrete blocks or clay pavers: £120 to £170 per m² (typical £145).
  • Natural stone setts: £170 to £250 per m² (typical £210).

Edging uplift rule of thumb: +£8 to £15 per m². Linear drainage to a soakaway: +£5 to £12 per m². Figures include VAT.

Worked example: 40 m² driveway

Concrete blocks at £120 per m²: £4,800 including VAT. With edging and drainage uplifts at midpoints: about £5,200 to £5,800 including VAT, subject to ground and access.

Programme and durations

  • Typical 40–60 m² driveway: 3 to 5 working days including excavation, sub-base, laying and compaction.
  • Lead times: 1 to 3 weeks typical. Longer in pre-Christmas and spring peaks.
  • Weather care: keep laying course dry, protect overnight, avoid heavy rain and frost.

Planning and SuDS essentials

Front gardens usually do not need planning permission if you use a permeable or porous surface or drain to soft landscaping. Impermeable surfacing over 5 m² at the front can require permission. Prefer permeable build ups or capture run-off to a soakaway or rain garden where feasible.

Regional variation

London and the South East commonly price 10 to 20 percent above the England baseline. Parts of the North, Wales and Scotland can be 5 to 10 percent below. Ground conditions and access often drive bigger swings than materials.

FAQs

How much does block paving cost per m²?

Concrete blocks are typically £95 to £140 per m² including VAT. Clay or permeable systems are about £120 to £170 per m², and natural stone setts about £170 to £250 per m².

Do I need edging and drainage?

Most driveways benefit from edge restraints. Use an uplift of £8 to £15 per m² for edging and £5 to £12 per m² for channels with a soakaway where surfaces are impermeable.

How long does a driveway take?

Allow 3 to 5 working days for a 40 to 60 m² driveway, subject to access, weather and ground conditions.

Is planning permission required?

Not usually if the surface is permeable or runoff is directed to soft landscaping. Impermeable surfacing over 5 m² at the front may need permission.

Are these figures tender ready?

No. They are planning grade benchmarks. For tenders, request a QS estimate with a BoQ and clear clarifications and assumptions.
